What are my choices for compliance?
If you or the group of companies to which you belong exceed the turnover and tonnage thresholds you can choose how you comply with these obligations, which can be by either:
- joining an approved packaging compliance scheme, or
- registering directly as a producer with the Environment Agency
Due to the time and resources that companies must invest in registering directly, the vast majority of producers choose to join a compliance scheme such as ePack.
Where producers choose to register directly, they must assess how much packaging their business handles and what their recycling and recovery financing obligations are, register with the relevant environment agency, submit an operational plan showing how they intend to comply with their recycling and recovery obligations, recycle and recover packaging waste, provide information to customers where relevant and confirm compliance to the relevant environment agency.
