The Batteries and Accumulators Regulations

The Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators Directive came into force in the EU in 2008. All producers and distributors of batteries that are affected must comply.

The objective of the directive is to improve the environmental performance of batteries by placing requirements on the design of all new batteries. It also seeks to reduce the number of batteries that go to landfill by maximising the separate collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries.

The directive was transposed into UK law for batteries and accumulators on the 26th September 2008 and for waste batteries and accumulators on the 5th May 2009.

REPIC helps producers and retailers to comply with the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations through our local authority and treatment partners.
